Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet Z9 44-in PostScript Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You produce gallery-size or oversized fine-art prints regularly
  • You need 44-inch width for full-size output
  • You're a fine-art print shop or large-format photographer
  • You'll calibrate and profile the device
  • You print wide-format weekly or more
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if some prints are smaller
  • It's fine if your workflow is from Lightroom or fine-art platforms
  • It's fine if you also print proofs alongside finals
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if your max print size is medium — 24-inch is cheaper
  • Skip this if you print CAD or GIS — get a Z6
  • Skip this if wide-format is monthly or less
  • Skip this if you can't budget for inks and maintenance
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Z9 44-inch PostScript is the larger photo-grade wide-format Z9 — 44 inches wide for full-size gallery prints and large fine-art reproductions. Same 9-ink platform tuned for color accuracy as the 24-inch, with the wider chassis and floor space requirements that come with 44-inch capability. ICC profile support and Pixel Control deliver consistent color across the wider format, with PostScript handling complex Adobe and design output natively. Where buyers regret it: ordering 44-inch when 24-inch would have served. The 44-inch matters when you produce gallery-size prints (24x36 and larger) or large fine-art reproductions; if your max output is medium prints (16x20, 20x30), the 24-inch costs less, takes less floor space, and uses the same inks and the same workflow. The 44-inch is significantly more expensive than the 24-inch and the floor space difference is real. Be honest about your maximum output size before sizing up. Best for gallery-grade fine art print shops, large-format photographers, and design studios producing oversized prints routinely with calibrated workflows.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been running this DesignJet Z9 for about 8 months now in our architecture firm. The 44-inch width handles our plan sets without tiling, and the PostScript support integrates seamlessly with our CAD workflow. Color accuracy on technical drawings is solid and registration is tight."
  • "Using this for poster and banner work at our print shop. Output quality is really good and the speed is decent for production runs, though the learning curve on the PostScript settings was steeper than I expected. RIP software could be more intuitive."
  • "Replaced an older plotter with this Z9 and the difference is night and day. Media handling is reliable, ink costs are manageable if you buy smart, and the warranty support from HP has been responsive when we needed it."

FAQ

HP DesignJet Z9 44-in PostScript Printer, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (904) 579-2558 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP DesignJet Z9 44-in PostScript Printer ships with starter 300-ml HP 746/746B/747 ink cartridges, which are pigment-based and designed for high-volume professional printing. These cartridges are available for all nine ink colors in the system, with an optional HP Gloss Enhancer Upgrade Kit for superior gloss uniformity. Replacement cartridges are also 300-ml high-yield. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The HP DesignJet Z9 44-in PostScript Printer is a wide-format printer designed for gallery-grade fine art and large-format prints, using a 9-ink pigment-based system for high color accuracy. In contrast, the HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E78625dn is a floor-standing A3 color MFP with a 25-ppm print speed, 90-ppm scan speed, and a 110,000-page monthly duty cycle, ideal for departments of 15-50 users. The DesignJet Z9 is specialized for large-format printing, while the E78625dn is a versatile office MFP with scanning and copying capabilities. For small offices needing color printing and scanning, the E78625dn is a more practical choice.
The HP DesignJet Z9 44-in PostScript Printer is designed for professional fine art print shops and large-format photographers, not typical small business needs. Its wide-format capabilities and high color accuracy are overkill for standard office printing. Small businesses with standard printing needs should consider a more suitable office printer.
Yes, the HP DesignJet Z9 44-in PostScript Printer supports color printing with a 9-ink pigment-based system, including Chromatic Red, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Matte Black, Photo Black, Chromatic Blue, Chromatic Green, and Gray. This setup ensures high color accuracy and is ideal for professional photo and graphic printing.
