  • You scan large stacks of two-sided originals — the 100-sheet single-pass DADF runs both sides at 73 ipm in one pass.
  • You don't need the hard drive, fax, or stand that ship with the C505/X — the /S configuration saves about $400 by leaving those off.

  • You print up to 10,000 pages a month — Xerox's recommended ceiling. Past that, look at the C605 (12,000) or VersaLink C7000.
  • You want fax — the /S doesn't include it; you'd need the /X variant or add the fax kit. (If you want fax, just buy the C505/X — same chassis, fax built in.)
  • You want a hard drive for booklet copying, annotation, or Bates stamping — Productivity Kit 497K18360 with 320 GB HDD is an extra-cost add (or order the /X which includes it).
  • You need more paper input — up to 4 additional 550-sheet feeders or the 2,000-sheet HCF can take you to 3,250 sheets total.
  • You want Wi-Fi — the optional Wi-Fi Kit (497K16750) is roughly $150.

  • You need 11x17 (tabloid). This is A4/letter/legal only — get a VersaLink C7000-series for A3.
  • You need fax out of the box — get the C505/X variant instead, which includes fax and the 320 GB HDD.

  • You need a 130+ sheet ADF for very large scan jobs — caps at 100 sheets.

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.
