Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet HD Pro is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're an AEC firm or repro shop running 500+ sq ft of wide-format daily.
  • You scan large originals (drawings, blueprints, posters) up to 44 inches multiple times a week.
  • You want one footprint for both plotter and scanner instead of two devices.
  • You need HP-GL/2 and PostScript for engineering and design workflows.
  • You handle complex CAD plots that benefit from 2400 x 1200 dpi optimized output.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if you scan a few times a week and want the convenience of one device.
  • It's fine if your plot volume is closer to 200-400 sq ft daily.
  • It's fine if you skip the PostScript upgrade and run HP-GL/2.
  • It's fine if you have Ethernet network infrastructure.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you only plot — a standalone T-series saves money.
  • Skip this if you only scan — a dedicated wide-format scanner is cheaper.
  • Skip this if your plot volume is under 100 sq ft daily.
  • Skip this if you need 60-inch width — DesignJet Z9+ Pro covers that.
  • Skip this if you want a compact desktop unit.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet HD Pro is a 44-inch wide-format multifunction for AEC firms, repro shops, and engineering departments that need both fast plotter output and a wide-format scanner in one footprint. Speed runs up to 866 sq ft per hour color and B&W using HP's thermal inkjet system. The integrated CIS scanner handles originals up to 44 inches wide at full color or B&W with one-pass capture. Print resolution reaches 2400 x 1200 dpi optimized, with HP-GL/2 driver support and PostScript via the optional PostScript upgrade. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet and USB. The regret on this machine: it's a serious capital purchase aimed at engineering volumes — if you scan rarely and only need a plotter, the standalone DesignJet T-series saves a lot of money, and if you scan more than you plot a dedicated scanner pairs better with whatever plotter you already own. Ink cartridge capacity runs 400 ml per color, and the unit supports HP Smart Stream RIP for production workflow integration. PostScript and HP-GL/2 are standard, and HP Click and HP DesignJet PrintOS provide cloud monitoring and job submission for distributed teams.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

The DesignJet HD Pro uses ink cartridges and supports large-format media, while the E78625dn uses toner and is optimized for standard office documents. For small offices needing standard color printing, the E78625dn is a more practical choice.
The HP DesignJet HD Pro is designed for high-volume, wide-format printing and scanning, making it more suitable for engineering firms or repro shops rather than typical small businesses. Its large footprint, specialized features, and high output capacity exceed the needs of most small offices. For small businesses requiring standard printing, consider a more compact and cost-effective option like the HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E78625dn.
Yes, the HP DesignJet HD Pro supports full-color printing with a resolution of up to 2400 x 1200 dpi. It uses pigment-based inks in cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to produce high-quality color outputs, making it ideal for architectural, engineering, and graphic applications.
